Hay for lining the birdhouses and beehives for bumblebees.
Amount sufficient for 2 birdhouses or smaller beehives for bumblebees or for 1 larger beehive for bumblebees (type T1)
Why hay?
Before hanging the birdhouses, pour a bit of sawdust into them. They are meant to replace the rot found in every natural hollow. Without this, the birds may be less willing to colonize the boxes. This applies especially to those species that do not cover the nests. The sawdust layer should have a thickness of 2-3 cm. Instead of sawdust, peat or a mixture of peat and sawdust can be used.
Cleaning the nests after the season
Due to the fact that the birds do not clean the nests themselves, a lot of dirt collects in the interior, in which parasites multiply. In the uncleaned houses, the old nests are piling up one above the other, making it impossible to set up new breeding sites over time. Cleaning the boxes usually does not cause any trouble. All types of boxes should be cleaned only from August to the end of February, making sure that the box is not inhabited. Cleaning properly made does not leave any old nests or dust in the house. Before closing the box, one must remember about putting a new layer of sawdust, peat or hay on the bottom.
